Photography of Julia Tuell
Published Works
Outdoor Life magazine published a photograph and poem in their May 1913 issue. Julia also drafted a novel that was illustrated by her son Varble in his early teens. The American Indian Magazine featured Julia’s “Evening in Camp” photo on the cover, with more photos inside.
A few of Julia’s photographs were published in anthropologist George Bird Grinnell’s book, The Cheyenne Indians, with credit given.
Beyond these outlets, Julia’s photographs have not been widely published. Julia was generous with her prints. Shave gave some to reservation museums and to families of subjects. The Museum of Men in San Diego, California, has a Tuell collection on display, and the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles has several of Julia’s photographs as part of the Grinnell collection, willed to the museum.
